Convoy of Hope Responds to Southeast Flooding

Floods that recently ravaged the Southeast claimed 10 lives, closed more than 100 roads and caused $250 million in damage. Your donation can help!

Even as the floodwaters were rising Convoy of Hope’s disaster response group was already establishing points of contacts in the region, mapping the hardest hit areas, developing a response plan and had an assessment team en route to the worst-hit areas where some residents died.

In one community a mother of two young children was returning from work when her minivan was swept off the road less than a mile from home. Though the woman was able to call 911 the floodwaters swept her away before rescue crews could reach her.

Initial reports say at least 1,000 homes affected by the floods are uninhabitable. Electricity and clean drinking water are also in short supply is some communities.

Convoy of Hope has dispatched five tractor-trailers of water and cleaning supplies to a point of distribution at Pray’s Mill Baptist Church in Douglasville and will supply another point of distribution with water and supplies in the coming days.

Volunteers from Chapel on the Hill - the church that is one of Convoy of Hope’s local contacts - is providing volunteers for the points of distribution. Convoy of Hope is also working with the Douglas County Emergency Management team, the North American Mission Board and several churches to meet the most immediate needs.

“Many families in these devastated communities need our help,” says Kary Kingsland, senior vice president of disaster response for Convoy of Hope. “By meeting their basic needs we are giving them a sense of hope that life will return to normal.” Click here to give.

According to Hal Donaldson, president and founder of Convoy of Hope, the generosity of supporters is what makes the organization’s response to crises like the floods possible.

“Our supporters financial support is needed and greatly appreciated,” he says. “Our people are on the ground, our trucks are rolling, and people are getting help because of our supporters’ compassionate response.”
