A soggy, rainy day in Battle Creek, Mich., did not stop more than 2,000 residents — many who are suffering from the poor economy and massive layoffs in their region — from attending a Convoy of Hope community outreach at a local middle school.
“Many of the volunteers were from families, who are struggling financially,” says Dan Clark, outreach director. “In many cases it was low-income families serving lower-income families.”

Though it rained into the afternoon, hundreds of people lined up to receive help. The 435 volunteers cut hair, served meals, fitted guests with shoes and clothes, and took family portraits.
According to Clark, many of the honored guests received brand new shoes for the first time in their lives. The W. K. Kellogg Foundation helped make the outreach possible, as did 500 pairs of new shoes from Samaritan’s Feet.
“It was impressive to see hundreds of local people give a day to their community,” says Clark.
