Getting to tornado survivors

The massive tornado that roared through Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Wednesday evening abruptly ended the spring semester for students at the University of Alabama.

That did not stop more than 40 of them from showing up at a Convoy of Hope distribution site on Saturday to load vehicles with food and water bound for shelters and heavily damaged neighborhoods.

“We were encouraged to go home after the storm hit, but I stayed to help. I live in California and did not have a flight home booked, so I can stay as long as I need to,” says student Ria Domier as she bagged relief supplies.

By Saturday morning Convoy of Hope crews were coordinating mobile distributions from three sites in Bessemer and Tuscaloosa, Ala. In addition to these three sites, Convoy of Hope is resourcing three other partner sites in the greater Birmingham area.

So far, Convoy of Hope has delivered five tractor-trailer loads of emergency relief supplies, with a total of 26 loads planned in response to this deadly storm.
