Convoy of Hope workers approaching Pratt City, Ala., early Friday evening saw a full-sized mattress skewered by a tree’s bare limbs. Further on, devastation surrounded them. Small groups of people dotted the landscape; most were bleary-eyed, but others smiled resiliently as they prepared meals on surviving grills.

In one neighborhood, Annie Spencer congregated with her family in front of her demolished home.
“My house was destroyed and something hit me in the eye,” says Annie, but she was glad to be alive. Several homes in her neighborhood bore marks that signified the number found dead in them.
Convoy of Hope volunteers distributed bottled water, energy drinks, ready-to-eat meals, granola bars, toilet paper, diapers and baby wipes in Pratt City. One elderly volunteer prayed with people.
After the team returned to the drive-through distribution site at a church, this elderly volunteer said of her contribution, “I can’t lift heavy loads, but I can pray.” A Convoy of Hope worker assured her, “You are lifting heavy loads when you pray.”
Convoy of Hope will continue to be here supplying Annie and thousands like her with food, water and hope.
