Nurturing Hope – El Salvador
The Nurturing Hope program in El Salvador started in January 2007 with four schools located in areas of desperate need in rural El Salvador. In May, Convoy of Hope received a USAID grant allowing us to expand the program to include a total of 18 schools, feeding more than 5,000 children a day. The program includes a hot protein/vitamin enriched meal, anti-parasite medicine, daily vitamins, school supplies, purified water at each rural school, educational material on health and nutrition with a Christian perspective, teaching for both parents and children through the church and school, and vegetable seeds to enable them to grow their own food. Children that were undernourished and now healthy and at the proper weight. Convoy of Hope plans to strengthen this program in El Salvador and replicate it globally. During the October HopeWalk we will visit many of these schools, talk with teachers and students and learn how we can participate in Nurturing Hope.
Convoy of Hope Distribution Center
While on HopeWalk you will be visiting the Convoy of Hope distribution Center. This is an exciting stop along our way as you will see where Convoy of Hope is able to warehouse the goods being distributed in the region. This is very significant as it allows for prompt distribution and response to needs as they arise. It is also an incredible demonstration of how working with local business owners has contributed to the ongoing success of the efforts in El Salvador and the region.
Refugee City Project
We will be visiting a community that was forced to relocate after the great earthquake in El Salvador several years ago. These families were displaced from their homes and now live in a "tent city." Convoy of Hope has partnered with the national church and other organizations to help these families rebuild their lives and community. By assisting with building a church, and providing food and water their lives have been improved. Sustaining their community in the future is a vital concern as well, and you will have the opportunity to witness how giving seeds to plant, and access to clean water has enhanced their lives. You will see the water filtration system in operation in this location.
Convoy of Hope is involved in many other projects in El Salvador and as time allows we will be visiting other projects...these are a few highlights.
