Convoy of Hope assisting local disaster response groups in response to deadly tornados
Springfield, Mo. — Responding to an unusually early and severe tornado season, Convoy of Hope has provided more than 120,000 pounds of relief supplies to tornado victims throughout the Midwest.
The Convoy of Hope Disaster Response team works with Emergency Management officials in affected areas. In order to help meet the needs of affected communities, Convoy of Hope is providing necessary supplies like food, water, PowerAde, gloves and cleaning supplies to local churches, community organizations and the American Red Cross to help these organizations in their coordinated response.
Convoy of Hope provided two loads of supplies to Caruthersville, Mo., a low-income area that was extremely hard hit by the April 2nd tornados. With no electricity available, volunteers distributed much-needed food and water to more than 500 people through door-to-door canvassing. A supply of PowerAde was also delivered to the Fire Department for use by emergency responders.
Another load of water and PowerAde was delivered to partners in Gallatin, Tenn. on Saturday, following a rampage of tornados that hit communities northeast of Nashville. Because of a large number of local volunteers, Convoy of Hope will not be coordinating work teams in these areas.
Even as it responds to these tornados, the Disaster Response team is gearing up for another severe hurricane season. Those wishing to help the organization may do so through any of a number of opportunities: skilled laborers are still needed for ongoing Katrina relief efforts; groups may assemble or collect personal hygiene kits; and corporate and cash donations are always welcome — remember that through corporate partnerships, every donated dollar is converted to between $5-8 of actual relief that reaches victims.
