Convoy of Hope Brings Relief to Tornado-Devastated Greensburg, Kansas
For Immediate Release:
Springfield, Mo. - Immediately after a deadly F5 tornado leveled Greensburg, Kansas, the Convoy of Hope U.S. Disaster Response staff began assessing the damage and providing necessary relief supplies. The organization is working with local partners to determine how it and other relief partners can best help the town of 1,500 that now lies in rubble.
When residents were allowed back into the community on Monday, the U.S. Disaster Response team distributed water to people digging through the debris of their destroyed homes, and relief agencies there to help them. Convoy of Hope sent another truckload of. of PowerAde, bottled water, paper towels and trash bags that arrived first thing this morning. A mandatory evacuation remains in effect for Greensburg residents. Convoy of Hope is also assisting outlying farming communities, also affected by the storm.
“Cash donations are the greatest need at this time. These donations will allow us to provide the most desperately needed items when the community is ready for them, and are most are the most effective way to help. Through our corporate partnerships, we are able to multiply the power of every donated dollar,” said U.S. Disaster Response Director Kary Kingsland. “Logistically, responding to this disaster has been a challenge. The town’s infrastructure is completely destroyed and they cannot handle unsolicited product donations at this time. There are no warehouses or storage facilities and well-meaning people can actually hinder rather than help the overall relief effort.”
The catastrophic F5 tornado was 1.5 miles wide when it struck the mile-wide town of Greensburg on May 4, 2007, leaving a trail of total devastation in its path. Approximately 95 percent of the town’s structures were destroyed and officials report that 10 people were killed.
To best help the people of Greensburg, Kansas at this time, cash donations can be made at http://www.convoyofhope.org, where a specific fund has been set up for the town.
The Convoy of Hope U.S. Disaster Team is also continuing to monitor flooding events across the Midwest.
