Convoy of Hope Extends Hospitality in the Midst of Devastation
For Immediate Release:
Springfield, Mo. - The people of Greensburg, Kansas experienced a measure of relief this past weekend as they continued to recover from the devastating tornado. In partnership with several other organizations, Convoy of Hope’s U.S. Disaster Response team is now operating a hospitality center that is serving residents and relief workers.
On Friday, the hospitality center, which is located on the property of Lighthouse Worship Center, opened to the public. As site manager, Convoy of Hope is overseeing the logistical aspects of running the hospitality center, as well as providing supplies. The hospitality center is the only local site providing hot meals on a daily basis, earning recognition from emergency responders and National Guard troops who claim it has the “best food in town.” Greensburg’s city manager and mayor have also visited the site for a bite to eat.
Hard-working volunteers prepare and serve breakfast and lunch to approximately 450 people each day, a number higher than originally expected. More than 800 people received meals at the hospitality center on Saturday, but with the help of donated supplies, the hospitality center is remaining well stocked. The hot meals have been a source of sustenance and comfort to both residents and relief workers following the tragic disaster.
“Convoy of Hope was here instantly with care for me as a pastor, my congregation and our community. They are helping with practical needs, but they have also recognized the sensitivity of a broken community and are ministering to their spiritual needs. It’s a comfort to know in the midst of this crisis that Convoy of Hope is here,” Pastor Christa Zapfe, of Lighthouse Worship Center, said.
In an effort to provide ongoing assistance to the relief work in Greensburg, U.S. Disaster Response staff will continue to oversee operations at the hospitality center as needed. In addition to serving meals, the center is the coordination site for clean up teams.
