Convoy of Hope in Honduras Prepositioned to Assist Felix’s Victims
Immediate Release:
Springfield, Mo. — Convoy of Hope International Director Kenton Moody is in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, riding out Category 5 Hurricane Felix and its 160 mph winds. With concern for the Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala region, Moody is prepositioned with rice, beans, maseca for tortillas, and salt.
Moody recalls 1998 Hurricane Mitch and the landslides it triggered, killing more than 10,000 people. Though Felix is said to be a narrower storm, it is a powerful one. Anticipating the coming destruction, Moody says, “When people think of hurricanes, they think of the severe winds, but our main concern now is flooding, especially since people were not evacuated.” Felix grew from a Category one to a Category 5 overnight and is expected to drop up to 12” of rain, creating the potential for devastating flashfloods and landslides.
Storm surge could create flooding of more than 18 feet in coastal areas. Felix will hit land with tremendous force, and will likely be downgraded to a Tropical Storm after passing over the affected region.
