Convoy of Hope Responds to Worldwide Crises
Springfield, Mo. - On the heels of an unprecedented response to a Federally-declared disaster in its own region, Convoy of Hope continues to respond to disasters around the world.
The compassion organization’s U.S. Disaster Team has been on the ground in central Florida since Saturday, coordinating its response effort after several tornadoes touched down there last week. More than 120,000 lbs. of relief products, bottled water, PowerAde, soup, cereal, soymilk, chips, and cleaning supplies, have been distributed to help victims there with another truck departing for Florida today. In terms of damage and lives lost, the devastation is being compared with that of Hurricane Charley.
· 1,600 homes are damaged
· 900 homes are totally destroyed or have major damage
· 4 counties have a boil water order in effect
Internationally, Convoy of Hope is active in Jakarta, Indonesia as that area is suffering the worst flooding in years.
In March, teams are heading to Zambia, Africa and Ecuador to educate locals in the construction of bio-sand water filtration systems and Chihuahua, Mexico, to relieve Mexico’s largest indigenous people group, the Tarahumara Indians. Convoy of Hope sent two loads of supplies there earlier this winter to relieve suffering from the unexpectedly intense winter.
