NFL-Sanctioned Convoy of Hope helps welcome Super Bowl XL to Detroit
Detroit, Mich. — Though the big game is coming to town, former Detroit Lions players, Rev. Lem Barney and Freddie Scott are inviting thousands of their Detroit neighbors to participate in much more than football as Convoy of Hope becomes a part of next weekend’s Super Bowl XL celebrations. In partnership with Convoy of Hope and The Inspiration Networks, local churches and organizations are joining together to host an official NFL-sanctioned Convoy of Hope outreach this Saturday.
This is the fourth Convoy of Hope held in the Detroit area, the second Super Bowl community outreach, and an officially sanctioned event of the Detroit Super Bowl XL Host Committee. Thousands of people are expected to attend the event designed to draw communities together in service to the underprivileged. With more than 150 churches of different denominations working side by side along with community organizations and businesses, it is sure to become the largest compassionate ministry outreach ever held indoors there. The event will feature job and health fairs, a Kids’ Zone, live entertainment, a three-on-three basketball tournament with celebrity guest players, and the distribution of thousands of pounds of food. And it’s all entirely free!
Held at the Michigan State Fairgrounds, Convoy of Hope will leave its mark on the community long after the event. Convoy of Hope is working with the local leadership team, the Institute for Black Family Development, and New Detroit Incorporated to roll out a two-year plan for ongoing compassion ministries.
“The NFL was impressed with the Convoy of Hope at last year’s Super Bowl and they are very happy to have us back again this year,” said Michael Redmon, National Director for the Convoy of Hope. “We appreciate the NFL recognizing the magnitude in scope and benefits to the City of Detroit and giving Convoy of Hope an official endorsement.”

The Detroit Super Bowl XL Host Committee has established the Sanctioned Event Program, on behalf of the NFL, to engage the community in Super Bowl. This form of community outreach allows local residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy Super Bowl related programming while at the same time provides financial benefits to local charities. Sanctioned Events are promoted through various Host Committee channels including the official Event Guide and Host Committee website.
For more than ten years, nonprofit Convoy of Hope™ has provided resources to organizations and churches to meet physical and spiritual needs for the purpose of making the community a better place. This is accomplished through international and domestic outreaches, supply lines, and disaster response.
