Huuricane Ike Response in Port Arthur Texas
One of the areas very hard hit by Hurricane Ike is Port Arthur, TX. An area that was also hit by Hurricane Rita in 2005.
Late night on Saturday, Convoy of Hope trucks moved into the area, trailed by a line of 60 cars looking to receive supplies. By noon on Sunday, we were set up and distributing ice, water and Meals Ready to Eat (MREs.) By 4:00, our team had served 289 families who had walked to the site, and 584 cars who drove through the site in their cars. A team of Convoy of Hope interns arrived in the community late Sunday and will be serving there for a couple days before returning to prepare for their trip to Moldova.
You can help. Please consider making a secure online donation.
The Rock Community Outreach in Port Arthur will be working with our team at the Point of Distribution (POD,) and is providing volunteers to staff the site. We are also coordinating teams to travel to Texas and assist in the response efforts..
The demand for PODs throughout the impact area is exceedingly high, and the area of need is very extensive. In total, power is out to well over 2 million people in Texas. Many have been told it will be several weeks to 2 months before it is all restored. The priority in Texas at this moment is still centered on Search and Rescue (SAR), looking for trapped or stranded survivors and providing shelter to all victims.
There was also a significant impact to Louisiana. Terrebonne Parish, the parish where Convoy of Hope had previously set up a POD for Gustav victims, has 13,000 flooded homes. The team we worked with in Houma, La reports that the situation there is worse than after Hurricane Rita in 2005.
Our resources are stretched thin, but our desire to make an impact remains strong. We need your help! Your secure online donation will bring help to hurting, desperate families.
With the help of our corporate partners, your $25 gift will provide $175 worth of water and ice to a family. Your $100 gift can provide $700 of desperately needed supplies. A $500 gift will multiply into $3,500 of food, water, and ice. Your gift of any amount will bring hope to people who have little hope.
Won’t you extend your compassion to desperate people living in the aftermath of these hurricanes?
Your gift will send hope and help to the victims of these devastating hurricanes. Thank you for your compassion and your willingness to help!
