We often get so caught up in our everyday routines, that we become too comfortable in life. And sometimes it is a simple act of kindness that pulls us off our routine to help someone else. You might have to go out of your way, change your schedule, miss an appointment or even give something up — but giving comfort to someone will be a just reward. We’re thankful for our many supporters and partners who go out of their comfort zone everyday to help us comfort the impoverished around the world.

Nelson Mandela, who’s known for ushering in the end to apartheid in South Africa, spent 27 years in prison for fighting against freedom. After spending the bulk of his life behind bars, Mandela became President of the country he was imprisoned by — but not before he finished college 24 years ago today (May 17.) Just a few years ago, it may have seemed impossible that we would be feeding more than 125,000 kids in nine countries. But it wasn’t impossible and like Mandela, we’re on a mission to change lives.

What are you facing that seems impossible?

With Mother’s Day weekend upon us we look to a woman who mothered more men, women and children than anyone could count.  Mother Teresa founded her missionary effort in the late 1940’s that in her words would care for “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone.”

Many would agree that Mother Teresa not only mothered those she directly served but also governments, cultures and even entire religions by living out her deep convictions long before they were quotes like the one below.

“It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” -Mother Teresa

At Convoy of Hope we encounter many storms. We see literal storms that leave families in great need, the seemingly endless storm of poverty and other adversities that come quickly then leave great destruction and debris. Life’s storms are both unwanted and unavoidable yet we’ve found that despite the most adverse conditions, kindness and compassion cannot be blown or washed away. Abraham Lincoln, a president who weathered what was probably our country’s greatest storm put it well when he said, “kindness is the only service that will stand the storm of life and not wash out.”

"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." -Sir Winston Churchill

We use two main filters for these inspirational quotes. First, we look for quotes that speak of compassion, generosity, love, hope and volunteerism. Second, the quotes and sayings need to be time-tested and true. This truth comes from Sir Winston Churchill, a man who made his living fighting hard for the lives of others.

You may not be leading a coalition of countries to end a world war, but we all have daily opportunities to live a life of giving.
